About the Conch Shell

In Ayurveda, the conch shell is known as "Shankha" in Sanskrit and holds a significant importance. It is often used for various purposes, including medicinal and spiritual practices. Here are some aspects of the conch shell in Ayurveda:

1. Medicinal Use: Conch shell powder is used in Ayurvedic preparations called Shankha Bhasma. It is used in remedies for digestive issues, acidity inflammatory skin conditions and bone health. Shankhabhasma contains calcium, iron and magnesium. It is widely used in the treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis.

2. Oral Health: Conch shell powder can be an ingredient in Ayurvedic toothpaste and powders, as it is thought to help strengthen teeth and gums.

3. Spiritual Significance: Blowing the conch shell is believed to purify the environment and ward off negative energies.

4.Symbolism: The conch shell is a symbol of purity and righteousness and is associated with Lord Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi. The Brahma Vaivarta Purana tells us about the unique and interesting creation of conches.

The sacred conch shell is home of the sea snail. The inside of the shell is hollow and shiny. The direction of the coiling distinct two types. One is in clockwise and the other one anti clockwise. The anticlockwise type is very rare and is considered very auspicious. In the scriptures there are many different varieties of shankh mentioned. 

The one pictured is called Shani Bhairw Shankh. 

Conch shells are also used in vedic astrology and vastu.
