Ayurvedic practitioner Alice prepared a Podikizhi treatment today for a patient suffering from Amavata (rheumatoid arthritis).

You might wonder what is this???? 

Podikizhi also called churna Pinda Sveda.

Churna/ podi = course or fine powders 

Pinda = bolus 

Sveda = Sudation 

This is a type of Ruksha (drying) pinda Sveda it can be done over the whole body or locally on a specific body part.

The herbs used are rough, light, dry, sharp, hot, hard to increase dryness in the body. Herbs such as Devadaru, Nirgundi, Rasna and Ginger are commonly used.

Podikizhi is a treatment which relieves pain, stiffness and swelling associated with arthritis. 

It is suitable treatment for Vata, Kapha, Ama and Medas.

It helps to remove stagnancy it clear the srotas (channel). This will help to remove water retention in the tissue and swelling in the joints. 

Indications for Podikizhi

  1. Amavata - rheumatoid arthritis
  2. Urustambha - stiffness in the thigh
  3. Medo roga - obesity
  4. Granthi - cystic swelling 
  5. Kapha Medavritavata - Kapha and meda obstruction of Vata

The churna (herbal powders) are heated and tied in the Potali (cloth bundle). It is then applied directly on the affected areas.  

The treatment is best done over 3, 5 or 7 days.
