Operative Care

My Dad recently had surgery which made me think of Sushruta’s in detail explained post- operative care.

Stay tuned for this. If you haven’t heard of Sushruta continue reading.

Many surgical techniques are dated back to Ayurvedic texts thousands of years ago.

Today we wanted to honour the Father of Surgery himself, Sushruta.

The image, originating from the Royal Australian College of Surgery in Melbourne, acknowledges his surgical contributions and celebrates him as the author of enduring Ayurvedic texts, whose principles are still practiced today.

It is recorded that Sushruta performed numerous plastic surgeries, rhinoplasty and other reconstructions, removal of cataracts and more – with detailed instructions from thousands of years ago. He mentioned different types of wounds and treatments in detail through his texts. Treatments included how to clean wounds, what to use as surgical tools, natural anaesthetics and more.

Fun Facts:

- Ayurvedic surgery continues to take place in India to this day

- Sushruta’s technique of plastic surgery continues to be used today (Su. Su.16)
