A fun fact you may not know about Kelsey - she has spent much of her life playing competitive sport. Having experience as a collegiate basketball player and coach in the United States, she hopes to incorporate Ayurvedic principles into the lives of athletes in her work in the field of Ayurveda.
Yes, you can incorporate Ayurvedic principles into your sports practice! The demanding nature of competitive sports can leave people questioning whether athletics has a place in an Ayurvedic lifestyle. Below are a few ways in which an Ayurvedic routine, herbs and diet can be useful for athletes.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, exercise brings about feelings of lightness, mobility and has a cleansing effect on the body. If an individual is experiencing emaciation, chances are they may embody qualities similar to those of exercise. For these individuals, excessive exercise may not be advised. Instead, more restorative and rejuvenating practices would be beneficial to bring balance into their body.
The Kapha time of the day is between 6am-10am and 6pm-10pm. This time of the day naturally holds more heavy qualities and can balance the qualities of lightness that are familiar to exercise. Generally, these are the best times of the day to exercise.
Recovery - As an athlete, I often think about how I wish I would have understood the fundamental pricinples of Ayurveda. The thought of having an Abhyanga oil massage or Pinda Sveda treatment to recover from a big game.
Rejuvenation - Many Ayurvedic Herbs and treatments can be used to rejuvenate depleted tissues that may be suffering from overuse. The physically and mentally demanding aspects of sport can be overwhelming for many athletes. In my experience, many athletes are in need of herbal Medya Rasayana treatment, providing much needed mental relaxation and clarity. Also Shirodhara treatment for deep relaxation.
Mental strength -Bringing in the mind and soul into a physical practice. How can I apply my body and mind in this sport in order to reach a higher state of consciousness? How can I be intensely present while playing my sport? How can I say ‘yes’ to challenges and bring mindfulness into a competitive practice?
Fuel the body with proper nutrition - By understating which foods are most suitable for your body type, you are able to make smarter choices to boost athletic performance.
Classical Ayurvedic texts indicate that we should not extend beyond about 50% of our physical capacity. You should discontinue physical activity once you have sweat forming on your brow or under your arms. Our culture supports excessive exercise, which can result in wear and tear on our bodies. Incorporating Ayurvedic principles can help us to learn how to intelligently practice sports.
