Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is a pressure on the median nerve. This can be caused by thickening from the lining of irritated tendons or a swelling in the area.
The median nerve is located on the palm side of your hand. This nerve provides sensation and controls the movement of the hand.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel include:
1. Pain.
2. Tingling sensation.
3. Numbness.
4. Weakness.
5. Morning stiffness.
If untreated it can lead to wasting and loss of the function of the hand.
Certain conditions increase your risk of carpal tunnel this includes diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, pregnancy, high blood pressure, smoking, high salt intake, sedentary lifestyle and obesity.
In Ayurveda carpal tunnel can be seen as a Vata and Kapha vitiation which causes a congestion of snayu (ligament). There is also a sanga / obstruction in the manibandha sandhi (wrist joint).
Ayurveda classical text mentioned an ailment called viswachi and Khalli. Which can be translated as loss of the function of the hand associated with pain.
Causative factors according to Ayurveda:
Katu tikta kashaya rasa - hot, bitter and astringent taste (in excess).
Ruksha bhojana - dry foods without any oils and heavy weight lifting.
The Ayurvedic treatment approach will be focused on Nidana Parivarjana (eliminating causative factors) and holistically treating with Ahara (food),
vihara (lifestyle) and aushadham (ayurvedic herbs).
Ayurvedic treatments such as Murivenna thailam dhara or picchu and upanaha a herbal paste application can be very effective.
We also recommend Marma and Yoga therapy. All the treatments are available at Lakshmi Ayurveda.
