Choosing to fill ourselves with gratitude and stillness before filling our plates.
When was the last time you sat down to eat free from distractions? Sitting down rather than eating while moving, checking your phone, watching television, reading a book, multi-tasking? By simply adjusting our eating habits we can make improvements to our overall physical, mental and spiritual health.
Ayurvedic nutrition understands that eating is one of the most sacred experiences we can have. Ayurveda speaks about Upayogasamstha, rules of intake for healthy eating. Today we will speak about a few of the rules that are exceptionally important in todays world.
Firstly, we find that most people eat their largest meal of the day at dinnertime. The digestive fire is at its strongest mid-day and this is when the larger meal should be taken. By consuming an easily digestible meal in the evening we are giving our digestive system a chance to rest and detoxify.
We suggest beginning your meal with a prayer of your choice followed by 3-5 slow breaths with the eyes closed. This brings in a higher level of awareness into eating. People struggling with unhealthy eating, eating quickly and binge eating find this very useful.
We should avoid excessive conversation while eating. This isn’t to say that you should sit silently around the dinner table with your family or lunch table with your colleagues, but choose the type of conversations you engage in. Avoid emotionally heated issues.
Remember that its best not to drink too much water while eating - usually no more than half a cup of warm water. Note warm water, no cold water as it can decrease our ability to digest the food. Dry meals may require slightly more water while moist may require no water at all.
We provide healthy eating guidelines to all of our clients during their initial consultation. If you have further questions about how to improve your eating habit you’re welcome to contact us via phone at 0406 810 547 or email info@lakshmiayurveda.com.au.
From the Lakshmi Team, we hope you have a rest of your week!
